Volunteering
Almost everything that happens at the Queer Center is made possible by people who volunteer here. We welcome anyone who wants to contribute their time, knowledge, and skills. Whether you want to commit a lot or a little time, prefer to work on tasks alone or as part of a team, enjoy meeting lots of people or not—there’s definitely a volunteer role that’s right for you.
Signal Support Group
Would you rather help out occasionally without making a commitment? Then join our support group on Signal. We occasionally post small, practical tasks there. These can be anything from baking a cake, covering opening hours or cleaning shifts, proofreading texts, and much more. Feel free to invite your friends* to join as well.
Here is the invitation link to the group.
Are you interested in getting more involved?
Of course, we’d love it if you’d like to get more involved in the work of the Queer Center! On the last Monday of January, March, May, July, September, and November, we hold a taster plenary session. There, you can get a glimpse into our organizational work and get to know us.
You can also volunteer without attending the taster plenary. If you’d like to support the Queer Center with a greater commitment and more responsibility, please contact our staff members Fred or Tristan Marie. They’ll discuss with you what you’re interested in, how it works, and what you need to feel comfortable in your volunteer role. Tasks involving more commitment or responsibility include, for example:
Hosting opening hours
Our spaces are open to visitors twice a week: Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Fridays from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. On Wednesdays, the staff is responsible for the opening hours. Fridays are made possible primarily by volunteers. We are still looking for volunteers to help on Fridays.
Taking care of things at the Queer Center
Our plants would appreciate someone to water them and treat any diseases.
Our facility could use a housekeeper to oil doors, repair furniture, and handle similar crafty tasks.
We’re looking for someone to maintain and manage our technical equipment.
Our library needs to be organized, sorted, and maintained.
Organize your own events or group meetings
You can bring your own event ideas to life or plan events that people in the communities want but can’t organize themselves. Our staff will be happy to help you find funding and get started with event planning.
Helping out at information booths
The Queer Center sets up information booths at events in the region to provide information about the Queer Center and queer issues. We’d love to have more volunteers help out with this.
Participate in a working group (WG)
The working groups take on specific areas of responsibility for the Queer Center. In addition to the WGs, there are other areas of responsibility that are currently handled primarily by the staff and the board, where we would welcome additional support: finances, association management, networking, website, and public relations. But first, let’s introduce the working groups:
Awareness committee
We explore ways to prevent violence and boundary violations at the Queer Center. If such incidents do occur, we are available to address them and work to restore a sense of safety. We meet every 1–2 months and ask for ongoing participation and confidentiality.
Property Working Group
We are looking to find new premises for the Queer Center.
Home Decoration Working Group
We organize the rooms of the Queer Center, sort through items, rearrange furniture, …
Social Media Working Group
We mainly post on Instagram and Facebook and could really use some help promoting our events more effectively. We rarely meet in person and communicate via a Telegram group.
Texts Working Group
We draft and revise texts for the Queer Center. This includes, for example, our mission statement, code of conduct, awareness concept, bylaws, articles of association, and more. We are currently working on a guide for handling boundary situations and a declaration of commitment for staff and volunteers. We usually meet online.
Infrastructure Working Group
We reflect on the structure of the Queer Center (e.g., plenary meetings, communication channels, working group structure, task distribution,...) and make suggestions for changes.
Contact
